Everyone’s Naming the Gap. Nobody’s Designed the Fix.

1. The Oversight Paradox: Human Control Over AI May Be Eroding
World Economic Forum
As AI systems get better, the human reviewing their output has less first-hand command of the work — and is therefore less able to catch it when the system is wrong. Oversight and capability rise together, and that’s the trap: quality assurance requires expertise, and expertise is built by doing the work the system has now taken over.

2. UN Chief Issues Urgent Governance Call on AI and Autonomous Weapons
UN News
From this week’s UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance in Geneva: “in every high-stakes decision — in justice, in healthcare, in policing — machines can inform, but humans must decide, and answer.” A global institution naming the exact distinction between machine input and human authority, at the highest level it’s been stated yet.

3. The Rise of Physical AI: What It Is, Where It’s Going, and the Legal Implications
Trowers & Hamlins
A sharp legal read on the “responsibility gap” opening up as physical AI moves from niche to widespread deployment between now and 2031 — including the observation that traditional law assumes harm traces back to a specific human decision-maker, an assumption physical AI is already breaking.

4. Article 14: Human Oversight — EU AI Act
Artificial Intelligence Act Explorer
The regulatory text worth reading directly rather than by summary: high-risk systems must let a human detect issues, avoid over-reliance, interpret output, and decide not to use it — and for some systems, no action may be taken without two separately competent people confirming it.

Most organisations deploying AI have checked whether the model is accurate. Far fewer have checked whether anyone ever decided which calls the model should make alone, and which ones need a human with real, protected authority to decide instead — especially when the call is physical, fast, and can’t be undone.

If that question is live in your world, it’s usually where my conversations start: mattsheehan@spatialnext.io
