Insight: Why Geospatial 2.0 is the Convergence Zone

I’ve been discussing Geospatial 2.0 for over 5 years. It has evolved and taken shape over that period. But, I will admit, I’ve been unsure on where, when, even if we will arrive at a destination. That was until recently.

Convergence has always been at the heart of 2.0. Specifically geospatial, AI and spatial computing; powered by the rapid evolution of technology. That evolution is truly unprecedented, and I say that as somebody who was actively involved in the rise of both the web and mobile. Let’s briefly dive a little deeper into each of these elements:

Data – New data streams are arriving faster than ever, particularly real-time feeds from satellites, drones, IoT devices, and miniaturized sensors. This live layer of context is redefining how quickly we can see and respond to change.

Geospatial – Once narrowly defined by maps, geospatial has emerged as a foundational layer for nearly everything we do, tying data to place and enabling insight, reasoning, and action in context.

AI – From task-specific machine learning to large language models that excel at understanding questions and generating answers, to new approaches like active inference that help machines “reason” in real time, AI is rapidly expanding what’s possible.

Spatial computing – The blending of digital and physical space is accelerating. Augmented reality, immersive 3D environments, and the rise of smart glasses point to a new interface, where we won’t just see geospatial data, we’ll live inside it.

Put these together and a bigger picture comes into view: the inevitability of Geospatial 2.0. Just as the web and mobile once felt like a leap until suddenly they were obvious, we’re now crossing into a new operating fabric for decisions.

The best way to understand this shift is through four elements that define Geospatial 2.0:
Context → Insight → Reasoning → Action.

  • Context: What’s happening – our live feeds and static foundations.
  • Insight: What it means – turning raw data into patterns and signals.
  • Reasoning: What to do next – AI as the “second brain in the room,” helping us navigate scenarios and make choices in real time.
  • Action: The execution of those decisions – whether that’s a rescue team deploying, a workflow updating, or an automated system triggering change.

This loop transforms geospatial from a support tool into mission-critical infrastructure. And as new interfaces like smart glasses arrive, this convergence will feel not just possible, but inevitable.

This isn’t theory, it’s happening now. For some, the appeal of Geospatial 2.0 is simply staying ahead of rapid innovation. For others, it’s about applying these ideas to real challenges – flood risk, smart cities, agriculture, insurance, climate resilience. Many of you see it as a path for professional growth, research, or preparing your organizations for what’s next. And for investors and thought leaders, it’s a signal of where markets and opportunities are heading. Whatever the lens, the common thread is clear: Geospatial 2.0 is becoming the operating fabric of the future – and being part of it means staying future-ready.

I’ll admit, I often ponder where to take this newsletter next. I share my own thoughts/opinions, and the most important news shaping our field, but Geospatial 2.0 is a movement bigger than any one voice.
