The Mirage of Prediction
AI spending is exploding. Seven trillion dollars projected globally. Microsoft alone will pour in eighty billion this year. Boards are approving hundreds of millions for AI programs without hesitation. And on the surface, it looks like money well spent: chatbots resolve service tickets, predictive models optimize supply chains, dashboards churn out insights.
But here’s the problem: we are mistaking prediction for intelligence.
Large language models and neural networks are pattern machines. They guess the next word or flag an outlier with remarkable accuracy. Yet when the world shifts—a pandemic, a regulatory shock, a supply chain collapse—these systems fail. They don’t understand. They can’t explain. They crumble under novelty.
The result? Glass castles in earthquake zones.
Why Prediction Hits a Wall
Scaling prediction-based AI faces three major risks. First, performance is plateauing; even frontier models struggle with unfamiliar reasoning tasks. Second, brittleness is built in: prediction works in stable environments but fails under disruption. Third, innovation is draining away. Every dollar invested in scaling prediction is a dollar not spent on systems that can adapt and explain.
These limits aren’t just technical, they are strategic. They leave entire industries vulnerable to the next black swan event.
A Different Path: Active Inference
If prediction-based AI is brittle, what would it take to design systems that thrive under disruption?
One answer is Active Inference, a brain-inspired framework that works by continuously simulating the world under uncertainty. Instead of waiting for errors and adjusting after the fact, it predicts, tests, and aligns with reality in real time.
In this paradigm, surprise isn’t failure; it’s information. Each unexpected signal becomes an opportunity to update beliefs and refine the model. That allows Active Inference systems to remain coherent, adaptive, and explanatory even when novelty strikes.
Some early implementations- such as Verses’ Axiom platform – are exploring how this approach can be applied. But it is early days. The promise is real, particularly in geospatial and agentic systems where reasoning under uncertainty is essential. Yet much of the work ahead lies in moving from theory and prototypes toward robust, widely deployed applications.
Why Geospatial 2.0 Matters
This shift has profound implications for geospatial intelligence. Today’s industry – what I call Geospatial 1.5 – stops at insight. Maps, dashboards, and models deliver information, but humans still interpret and decide.
Geospatial 2.0 completes the cycle:
- Perception from sensors and satellites.
- Reasoning from engines that explain cause-and-effect under uncertainty.
- Action from intelligent agents that execute decisions.
Picture insurance: a reasoning engine adjudicates claims in real time, explains outcomes to regulators, and adjusts reserves before a hurricane makes landfall. Or ports: a digital twin simulates cascading disruptions from a strike, reroutes shipments, reallocates capacity, and advises insurers—all before bottlenecks fully unfold.
This is not automation. It is antifragile intelligence, systems that grow stronger through disruption.
The Strategic Choice
The divide is clear. Keep investing in bigger prediction engines and risk fragility. Or pivot toward reasoning engines that adapt, explain, and scale across industries.
Prediction is yesterday’s story. Intelligence is tomorrow’s. And Geospatial 2.0 is the bridge that makes it real.
