I was interested in a recent post by Matthew Lewin titled: Communicating Your Big Ideas. In the article Matt discusses the SCQA model. This is a framework used to structure a narrative or message in a logical and engaging way. The acronym stands for Situation, Complication, Question, and Answer.
I work with geospatial sales and marketing teams helping with communication; that includes planning, crafting pitches, building stores, creating content, and executing strategies. Generative AI (GenAI) has become my go to tool.
In this article I wanted to advance the thoughts shared by Matt in his post, by discussing the SCQA storytelling framework and how GenAI can help in both building and execution. Let’s step through the framework:
1) The Opening Scene (Situation)
Every narrative has a starting point, a backdrop against which the story unfolds. This initial setting establishes the prevailing circumstances, allowing the audience to grasp the context fully. It lays the groundwork for what’s to come, presenting widely accepted facts that align everyone’s understanding.
Analogy: Think of the situation as setting the scene in a movie. You need to know where and when the story is taking place before the action starts.
Generative AI: GenAI can quickly synthesize and summarize large amounts of data to accurately set the context and provide relevant background information for the situation.
Geospatial Use Case:
A city is experiencing rapid urban growth, leading to increased traffic congestion, air pollution, and a strain on infrastructure. City planners and policymakers need to understand the current state of the city’s transportation network and its impact on the environment and quality of life.
Geospatial Story: 2D maps can provide an overview of the city’s layout, road networks, and hotspots of congestion. 3D digital twins can offer a realistic representation of the city’s built environment, allowing for a better understanding of the spatial relationships between different areas and infrastructure.
2) The Twist (Complication)
No tale would be complete without a disruption – an obstacle, a challenge, or a sudden change that upends the existing order. This complication injects tension, highlighting issues that cannot be ignored or obstacles that demand resolution. It’s the catalyst that propels the narrative forward, preventing the status quo from remaining unchallenged.
Analogy: The complication is like the inciting incident in a story, where something goes wrong that the characters need to address.
Generative AI: By analyzing patterns and trends, GenAI can help identify potential issues, challenges or disruptions that could complicate the existing situation.
Geospatial Use Case:
Despite efforts to alleviate traffic congestion, the problem persists, and air quality in certain neighborhoods continues to deteriorate. Additionally, a new residential development project is proposed in an already heavily congested area, raising concerns about its potential impact on the surrounding community.
Geospatial Story: 4D visualization can show how traffic patterns and air quality have changed over time, revealing the areas most affected by the ongoing issues. 3D digital twins can simulate the impact of the proposed development project on the existing infrastructure and traffic flow.
3) The Pivotal Question
Amidst the turmoil created by the complication, a crucial question emerges, encapsulating the core of the dilemma at hand. This question crystallizes the challenge, focusing the audience’s attention and setting the stage for the resolution. It’s the beacon that guides the narrative, inviting contemplation and anticipation of the forthcoming answer.
Analogy: The question is like the mystery in a detective story. It’s the puzzle that needs to be solved.
Generative AI: GenAI can assist in framing insightful questions by exploring different angles, considering alternative perspectives, and anticipating potential implications or outcomes.
Geospatial Use Case:
How can the city effectively address the traffic congestion and air quality problems while accommodating future growth and development in a sustainable manner?
Geospatial Story: Combining 2D maps, 3D digital twins, and 4D analysis, city planners can identify potential bottlenecks, assess the feasibility of alternative transportation options, and model various scenarios to find the most effective solutions.
4) The Resolution (Answer)
Finally, the answer arrives, a beacon of clarity amidst the uncertainty. It offers a solution, a path forward, or a set of recommendations that address the question raised by the complication. This resolution aims to dissolve the tension, restoring balance and providing a sense of closure, or at least a way forward.
Analogy: The answer is the resolution of the story, where the detective solves the mystery and restores order.
